Waste sorting and recycling
Recycling is a good way of contributing to a better environment. But is it any use, one might ask? Rumour has it that everything goes to the landfill anyway. That's rubbish. Recycling works!
We are gradually introducing sorting of packaging in our refuse rooms. There are signs in the refuse rooms to help you, and your area landlord will be happy to answer your questions.
Sorting your waste is easy, just keep in mind to rinse or wash sticky packaging. Please read our useful tips about sorting and how the material is recycled.
If sorting has not yet been introduced in your refuse room, you can sort your waste at a recycling center. These centers are located all over Umeå, Holmsund, Obbola and Sävar. Please check Vakin's website to find out exactly where the centers are located. At a recycling center you can hand in paper, glass, rigid plastic and metal packaging.
There are a number of things that you must not recycle in Bostaden's refuse rooms. For instance electrical and battery-powered appliances, old bicycles, car batteries, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes or furniture. Please leave to the recycling center, "Återvinningscentralen", in Gimonäs or Holmsund. For more information and opening hours, please call 090-16 15 27.
Tyres are to be handed in to the retailer.
Arrange the sorting well in your home, so you can dispose of garbage and recyclables easily in the refuse room. The easiest way is to have two buckets, one for household waste and one for recyclable material. Then you can sort the recyclable waste in the refuse room. Rinse or wash sticky packaging.
Separate all multi-material packaging, except for metal tubes with plastic corks (for instance mustard or mayonnaise). They can de disposed of as a whole in the bin for metal recyclables. Fold or flatten small and large cardboard boxes. Open cans in both ends and flatten them. This will save a lot of space. Dot not mix clear and coloured glass. The container for clear glass is for uncoloured glass only. Glass with the slightest tint of brown, green or light blue must be disposed of in the container for coloured glass. Please tie and dispose of your trash bags properly.
Sort by clear or coloured glass. Alls glass is recycled by Svensk glasåtervinning. Most of it becomes new bottles and jars. The rest is used in the production of insulating materials, among other things.
All paper goes to I L Recycling's plant in Holmsund for sorting and packaging in bales. Corrugated cardboard is taken care of by Obbola Linerboard and paper packages by Örebro kartongbruk. Old newspapers either become new newsprint at Hylte, or fresh pizza cartons at Fiskeby!
All rigid plastic packaging is sent to Strömsund, where they produce cable protection, pipes, fence posts and many other things from the returned material.
Used metal packaging is transported to Arvika. Recycled cans and lids become reinforcement bars and new packaging.
Organic waste is the same as food scraps, soft plastic and soiled paper or plastic packaging. Energy from such garbage is recovered in Umeå to provide district heating and hot water in our homes. All household waste is weighed. Bostaden pays by the kilo waste collected. We could cut the costs substantially if you help us sort the waste properly.
All batteries are taken care of by SAKAB in Holmsund, where environmentally hazardous substances are managed securely.
